The growth of lively Roman Tongeren was accompanied by an increasing demand for clean water. An aqueduct – an artificial earth embankment with a wooden water basin – was built to supply the city centre. Nowadays, the remains of this aqueduct are known as Beukenberg, a stunningly beautiful walking area close to the city centre. Beukenberg is acknowledged as a protected archaeological monument..... the largest in Belgium!
The walking route Verborgen Moois Beukenberg (Hidden beauty in Beukenberg) takes you to the loveliest corners of this area of natural beauty.
