Teseum

Three museums in one

The Teseum is a unique museum site at the Basilica of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwebasiliek), in the heart of Tongeren. Descend into the foundations of ancient sanctuaries, admire intriguing art treasures and explore every nook and cranny of the attics and the belfry of the basilica.

Modern multimedia brings two thousand years of history back to life. A visit to the Teseum is an interactive experience for visitors of all ages.

Archaeological site

In the underground section of the museum, the foundations of buildings, the remains of defensive walls and extraordinary finds tell the story of the people who lived and practiced their faith here. This evocative archaeological site can be experienced with all your senses.

Superb art treasures

Tongeren has been an important city for the Christian faith ever since the Middle Ages. This is something you cannot help but notice when you explore the treasury of the Teseum. Many of the objects on exhibit here are on the Flemish Government’s list of Masterpieces.

Pilgrims have been drawn to Tongeren for centuries, primarily on account of the relics in this exceptional collection. Relics are the physical remains or belongings of saints. They were regularly on public display, and people flocked here from far and wide to look at them.

Tower

The Basilica of Our Lady is Tongeren’s most prominent landmark. This Gothic structure features a robust belfry that is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tower has now been opened to the general public for the first time. Climb the stairs past the attics and the various rooms inside the tower, as well as the carillon with its 49 bells. A glorious, unobstructed view of the rolling hills of Hesbaye awaits you at the top.

The monastery garden and cloister comprise an unexpected haven of tranquillity in the heart of the city, evocative of a monastic estate that fell into disuse many years ago. The beautiful colonnade framing the courtyard and the two Gothic chapels complete the picture.
